School Culture and Expectations
School Culture & Expectations
Appearance and Dress: Appropriate dress and grooming should be the responsibility of students and their parents. If a manner of dress, grooming, and/or appearance disrupts the normal education process, or presents a physical hazard, school administrators shall take necessary action to correct the situation. There shall be adequate coverage of the body. Tube tops, spandex, and/or bare midriffs are prohibited. Dresses, skirts, or shorts must be of moderate length. Clothing items (or wording or picture upon same), which in the opinion of the principal or designee tend to disrupt the educational atmosphere are not permitted.
Weather: Heavy clothes, coats, hats, and gloves will be needed in the winter months, as children will go outdoors for recess on most days. Students will have outdoor recess unless the “feels like” is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
Personal Items: Valuable merchandise should not be sent to school. Items brought from home are the owner’s responsibility. The school is not responsible for loss, theft, or breakage of valuable personal items.
Lost and Found: Jackets, hats, mittens, etc., are often turned into the school office when found. Too often these items are not claimed. Parents/guardians are welcome to check the "Lost and Found" to claim misplaced items. Labeling easily lost items with your child's name is highly encouraged. Unclaimed items will be donated periodically.
Academic Policies
Academic Policies
The letter grades the children earn are based on the grading scale percentages that have been established in TSC Policy 5421:
(A= 90%-100%) (B= 80%-89%) (C= 70%-79%) (D= 60%-69%) (F= 59% & Below)
Students absent from school are responsible for work and information missed. Generally, students have one or two days to submit all make-up work as required by the teacher. However, the teacher is permitted to arrange a longer period of time if he/she deems it necessary. Make-up work not completed and unsatisfactorily submitted to the teacher may result in an unsatisfactory grade.
iRead Testing
iRead Testing: All second and third grade students in Indiana are required to take and pass the third grade reading test known as IREAD-3 prior to being promoted to 4th grade. The dates of administration are determined by the state of Indiana and will be published on our website and through the MME newsletter.
IN Academic Standards
Indiana Academic Standards: The Indiana Academic Standards serve as a guide for all instruction that takes place at Mayflower Mill Elementary School. The standards for each grade level and subject area can be found on the Indiana Department of Education’s website, located at: https://www.in.gov/doe/students/indiana-academic-standards/
Awards
Awards: The Tippecanoe School Corporation believes in academic success for all of its students. To recognize the academic success of the TSC student body, each school will establish an Honor Roll. Honor Roll recognition will take place at the conclusion of each nine-week grading period. Students with A's and B's will be recognized with the Honor Roll distinction. Principal Awards and the M.M.E. award for the Most Marvelous Effort will be presented at each grade level.
Report Cards
Report Cards: Elementary Schools in the Tippecanoe School Corporation have four reporting periods lasting approximately 9 weeks. Parents are encouraged to review grades throughout the 9 weeks to support student learning. Report cards can be accessed through the PowerSchool Parent Portal on the TSC website.
Parent/Guardian Involvement & Volunteers
Parent/Guardian Involvement & Volunteers
Building Security: Visitors must ring the video doorbell at the main entrance and request entry into the secure vestibule after identifying themselves and the nature of their visit.
Telephone Calls: Teachers are unable to receive phone calls during instructional time. You may leave a Voicemail message. Students are not allowed to use the school phones unless an emergency exists and they have permission from the supervising adult. Urgent messages for students will be delivered to classrooms.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: We will hold Parent/Teacher conferences in the fall and spring to discuss your child’s progress. Your child’s teacher will share scheduling information. Only one conference will be scheduled per child.
Volunteers: In an effort to continue our due diligence with regard to providing a safe environment for our students and staff, we require all volunteers having ongoing contact with children and/or supervising students (field trips, etc.) to have cleared an expanded criminal background check. These background checks are conducted through Background Investigation Bureau (BIB).
The criminal background check will search national sex offender databases, court records, etc. The cost of the criminal history check is $20.45 (base cost) and is paid for by the volunteer through a link on our website: SecureVolunteer.
Once approved, the volunteer will receive a TSC Volunteer identification card that will be valid for a period of three (3) years. If you volunteer in multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one background check.
Volunteer background checks may take several business days to process so it is important to plan ahead. We appreciate your understanding of this important safety guideline.
TSC Volunteers (Board Policy 8120): the full guidelines can be viewed at any time on the TSC webpage.
Field Trips
Field Trips
Field trips are an essential part of our curriculum, offering students unique learning experiences outside the traditional classroom.
Chaperone Guidelines: All field trips will be announced in advance. Classroom teachers will determine if parent volunteers are needed and manage the number of attendees. If you have agreed to chaperone for a field trip, you must arrive at the designated time. Chaperones should be prepared to ensure the safety of the students under their supervision and follow the directions of school staff. To qualify as a chaperone, you must have an approved background check on file through TSC’s approved vendor.
Communication to School
Communication to School
Mayflower Mill Elementary values open, balanced communication. Please contact your child's teacher first regarding any academic or social-emotional questions. During school hours, call the office for urgent messages; classroom calls go to voicemail to minimize interruptions. Teachers check messages before/after school and during prep time. Emails are typically answered within 24 hours. To support teacher well-being, messages sent after hours or on weekends will be addressed the following school day. Follow our social media for school updates, maintaining positive comments to model best behaviors. Stay informed via the TSC2GO App, school websites, and the Parent Portal. The Grinder newsletter is emailed monthly from the school office to our families. This communication contains important information about the school, the calendar of upcoming school events, and activities. It is also available on the Mayflower Mill Elementary School website.

A student may be referred to the school nurse by a staff member, a parent, or per self.
Immunizations
Immunizations:
All minimum intervals and ages for each vaccination as specified per CDC guidelines must be met for a dose to be valid. When a student enrolls for the first time in a school corporation, a statement of the student's immunizations will be supplied to the school by a parent or guardian. This record must show that the student has received at least the minimum number of immunizations at the required intervals for the student's age. Students may not attend school until required immunizations are up to date.
TSC Immunization Policy (Board Policy 5320): the full guidelines can be viewed at any time on the TSC webpage.
Exclusion Criteria
Exclusion Criteria:
Criteria that may be used to determine if a student may return to school include:
Fever free for at least 24 hours (since last temperature over 100°), without the use of fever reducing medication. Free of vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours (after the last episode) of vomiting or diarrhea and able to tolerate his/her normal diet. If the illness is communicable and requires medication intervention, the student has been on the medication for 24 hours, or as directed by a licensed medical provider, before returning to school.
If a student is sent home for live head lice, the student may return to school after home treatment is complete and after being cleared by school personnel.
The student is able to participate in normal school activities without fatigue, pain, headache, fever, or relapse of symptoms. Students administering emergency medications outside of the nurse’s office will report to the nurse that the medication was administered.
Return of Medications to Parent/Guardian
Medications must be picked up in the health office by a parent, guardian, or designee who is at least 18 years old and with written permission from the parent/guardian. Failure to comply with this may result in disciplinary action for your child.
Vision and Hearing Settings
Vision Screening:
Vision screenings are completed annually for all students enrolled in Kindergarten or 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 8th grades. Vision screenings may also be done for students who are referred due to possible vision concerns and for students who are new to the corporation. A Modified Clinical Technique (MCT) is a vision screening that is performed annually on Kindergarten or 1st grade students by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. If the screening indicates the need for follow-up or additional vision testing for a student, the school nurse will notify the parent/guardian by written referral. It is hoped that the parent/guardian will follow up with a provider for further evaluation and share the results with the school nurse for school medical records. If parents/guardians need assistance in finding a provider or resources for financial assistance, the school nurse may be contacted.
Hearing Screening:
Hearing screenings are completed annually for all students enrolled in 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th grades, a student who has transferred into the school corporation, and a student who is suspected of having hearing problems. Parents/guardians will be notified by a referral letter if a concern is identified during the screening process. Further evaluation may be recommended and it is hoped that the parent/guardian will follow up with a provider and share the results with the speech clinician for school medical records. Any questions related to these screenings should be directed to the school nurse. Parents/guardians who do not wish to have this screening for their child should notify the school principal and school nurse, in writing, of their objection within the first 2 weeks of the school year on an annual basis.
